How big is Michigan Tech?
Michigan Tech is home to more than 7,000 students and approximately 15,000 year-round residents live in the surrounding area. The region has a small-town feel and students and community members say it’s just right—not so big that it's easy to get lost, but not too small, either. Our campus itself is moderately sized—the main campus corridor spans roughly three-quarters of a mile, which is walkable from end to end in about 15 minutes.

Michigan Tech is the home of the Huskies, with 14 NCAA teams and the first varsity esports team at a public college or university in Michigan. Women’s NCAA teams include basketball, cross country, Nordic skiing, soccer, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. The Huskies Pep Band doesn’t march—they meander. Huskies Pep Band encompasses the spirit of music and camaraderie at Michigan Tech, performing at athletic events, parades, campus celebrations, weddings, and more. Established in 1967, they have a longstanding tradition of black-and-yellow striped overalls, funky hats, and making some of the loudest sounds around (116 decibels, in fact)!

Michigan Tech’s mascot is Blizzard T. Husky (the “T” stands for “The”). Blizzard wears the number "85" to recognize the year 1885, which is the year Michigan Tech was originally founded as the Michigan Mining School.

Winter at Michigan Tech is the experience of a lifetime! With more than 200 inches of annual snowfall, Huskies find endless ways to enjoy our region’s legendary winters. Popular winter activities include skiing, snowboarding, broomball, curling, dog sledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and more. Plus, Michigan Tech celebrates Winter Carnival each year—one of the largest annual winter celebrations in the nation, dating back to 1922.

Yep! You can keep an eye on our campus and community from anywhere in the world with our webcams. Capture views across campus, of our recreational trails, downtown Houghton, the Portage Lake Lift bridge, and more. Is Michigan Tech test optional?
SAT and ACT test scores are not needed to apply for undergraduate admission. Domestic students will receive an admission decision based on the high school transcript. Homeschool applicants and students with a GPA below a 3.0 may be asked to submit official test scores or other documentation.

Future first-year students can either use Michigan Tech’s first-year application or apply with the Common App. Transfer students can apply using Tech's transfer application.
