ABS Power Windows 5 Door Row Speed Airbags Sensitive Remote Volume B6 TRI-CITY HERALD FRIDAY, JUNE 26, 2009 MID-COLUMBIA tricityherald.com Officer suffers critical injuries as car hits cow DEE RIGGS THE WENATCHEE WORLD An Oroville police officer was in critical condition Thursday with head injuries suffered after the patrol car he was driving struck a cow a day earlier, the second vehicle-cow accident in northcentral Washington in two days. The Washington State Patrol said Christopher B. Patterson, 30, was returning to Oroville after dropping off a prisoner at the Okanogan County jail in Okanogan when he struck the cow. The accident happened about 12:20 p.m. Wednesday on Highway 97, about nine miles south of Oroville.
Patterson was airlifted to Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane. In that accident, and one near Ephrata, the cows were killed on impact, troopers said. Both accident locations were closed rangeland, meaning it was the responsibility of the livestock owners to keep the cows off the roadway. Troopers said they are attempting to locate the owners of the cows. It would be up to the prosecutor in each county to file charges of allowing animals to roam at large.
The other accident occurred about 11:45 p.m. Tuesday on Highway 2 28 about two miles east of Ephrata. Troopers said a motorcycle driven by Russel D. Triplett, 59, of Soap Lake, hit a cow and was involved in a subsequent accident. The accidents sent Triplett to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he was in serious condition Thursday.
Troopers said a vehicle stopped in front of the cowmotorcycle accident, and put on its hazard lights, but was struck from behind by another car. The impact sent one of the cars into the motorcyclist. Also injured in the subsequent accident was Dora Coreas Guzman, 46, of Ephrata, who was driving a 2006 Toyota sedan. She suffered a neck injury and was treated at Columbia Basin Hospital in Ephrata and released. DEATHS www.tricityherald.com/obits M.
