ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH TUESDAY, JULY 2, 1991 OBITUARIES Actor Michael Landon, 54; Star Of 'Little House' MALIBU, Calif. (AP) Michael Landon, the boyishly handsome actor who battled cancer with the same affability he brought to roles in "Bonanza" and "Little House on the Prairie," died Monday (July 1, 1991) at 54. Mr. Landon, who also starred in the TV series "Highway to Heaven" and whose career was jammed with writing, producing and directing credits, died almost three months after he announced his illness.

The actor died at his home in Malibu. Mr. Landon was set to start work on the new CBS series "US" when he was diagnosed with liver and pancreatic cancer on April 5. "I think every little moment gets more important after something like this," Mr. Landon said after he learned he was terminally ill.

"It's not like I've missed a hell of a lot. I've had, pretty good lick here." news conference where he discussed his health, Mr. Landon said, "I think you have to have a sense of humor about everything. I think 'Highway to Heaven' helped me with that since I played a dead guy anyway." His upbeat attitude and determination to fight the disease drew praise and admiration. In May, he exuded optimism and joked about his cancer treatments in an appearance on "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson.

Carson, whose son, Richard Carson, was killed last week in a car accident, said Monday: "This has been a devastating week for me and my family. Michael called last Monday 'expressing his deepest sympathy on the death of my son, Ricky. The courage and sensitivity he showed in our conversation, in comforting me while he was in great pain, attests to the quality of this man and his character." Pernell Roberts, who played Adam Cartwright, half-brother to Landon's Little Joe in "Bonanza," is the sole surviving member of the original Cartwright clan. As a producer and performer, Mr. Landon favored humanistic dramas looking at life, death, family and calamity.

But behind the scenes he was known as an outspoken stickler who alienated colleagues with inflexible demands. He said his attraction to uplifting television was prompted by a miserable childhood. "It's because my family background was so different," he said a few years ago. "It was filled with religious preju- Kevin S. Goins, 18; Volunteer In Sports Programs For Youths Kevin S.

Council OKs Project East Of Galleria By Carolyn Bower Of the Post-Dispatch Staff Over the objections of Mayor James W. Finger, the Richmond Heights City Council gave preliminary approval Monday night to a commercial development east of the Saint Louis Galleria shopping center. "This is not the best use for that property," Finger said after the council's action. Lloyd Abrams and Richard Rothman are seeking public improvements including alleys and streets valued at $7 million and tax increment financing of $4.985 million for their $38.5 million project, called Brentwood Place. "What they want to do is tear down strip shopping to put up strip shopping," Finger said.

"We've got strip shopping there. Why do we need prettier strip shopping?" Finger said most council members wanted a better development but were unwilling to wait a year or two for another offer. "I guess some them want this off their backs," Fingers said. The council voted 7-2 for three bills concerning plans for the development and tax-increment financing for it. A second vote is needed before each bill can become an ordinance.

The votes Monday do not obligate the council to allow use of eminent domain to obtain property for the project, City Attorney Kenneth Heinz said. Several council members said they had voted for the bills on the condition that the developer and property owners resolve concerns about fair compensation before the next vote, later this summer.
