It's fascinating how ICT(Information and Communications Technology) is helping India with the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) over the past few years. India, which is one of the largest democracies, is conducting General Elections this year. Conducting General elections with the help of the traditional-based ballot paper system is a tedious task. Thanks to ICT-enabled EVM machines over the ballot paper system, it helps provide efficiency, effectiveness, sustainability, and cost & time-saving in elections. EVMs, with the help of VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail), ensure error-free polls. It's surprising that the Global North is still conducting the traditional-based ballot paper system. Furthermore, EVMs need to be enabled with Artificial Intelligence to conduct smooth elections.#ICT #ICT4D #UOM #GDI #Election2024#Information_and_Communications_Technology#University_Of_Manchester#UOM#GlobalDevelopmentInstitute#UniversityOfManchester#ICT4Development Richard Heeks #AI#ArtificialIntelligency

As we approach 2024, where at least 40 countries will hold elections, this strikes me as the biggest, most concerning threat of generative AI on the information space. And it's already happening in Argentina: https://lnkd.in/ebcQTbkD

[PANEL HIGHLIGHTS]Panel: AI and Political CommunicationPanelists: Dr. Sithembile Mbete, Dr. Delta Ndou, Lisa Reppell, Paul NdihoIn recent years, Africa has become a testing ground for new elections-related technologies. The influence of foreign companies producing election-related technologies has an impact on the sovereignty of electoral management bodies. “In some cases, a country may find itself locked into a particular technology solution and only able to continue using its digital systems by maintaining a commercial relationship with the particular vendor that provided them. The worst manifestation might arguably be that a country, or more specifically, the election management body, cannot access its own election data at all for various reasons, such as the vendor no longer being in business or because the individual or team who developed the software is no longer available.” – Alt. AdvisoryAfrica is struggling to deploy the most basic biometric equipment for election. With the advancement of AI, how and in what ways can AI be leveraged in an environment struggling with technological infrastructure? How do we create equity when 19% of Africa has easy access to technology? How do we localize and domesticate these technologies for the advancement of democratic outcomes?#IPE2024 #AmplifyCitizenVoices

In the face of news breaking literally hourly on the topic of AI (is it me, or does it feel like 1998 all over again?🤔) ...today our CTO (E. John Sebes) and I decided it was time to assert some (5) guiding principles imperative to any responsible research (let alone development) efforts of AI in elections. Thus, this released statement (below).Folks, here's the thing... if we don't get in front of this juggernaut, 2024 will be sheer chaos (not that it isn't already). Well before the calendar turns to November 2024, some numb-nuts is going to make a quick "elections chatbot" with existing models and others will jump-in to showcase the lies it tells, which will be as easy as asking 'How much of this is true? <url>' all for selected tinfoil hat content. We're working to assemble a multi-stakeholder group of the best and brightest in AI technology, elections, and democracy administration. Please seriously consider supporting this work, and if you're of the mind on any of these topics, get at me. 🤓 Tick-Tock. Cheers.

Learn from the Singaporeans! Singaporean Government will pay for its citizens age 40 and above to go back to school in light of so much knowledge and jobs becoming outdated as a result of AI. They are literally training their citizens, with free courses on AI. Watch the speech of Dr Tan Wu Meng, Member of Parliament, from min 4:18 referring to the three emerging challenges, one being AI technologies and the current plans of the Government to support citizens-at-large develop new competencies and skills. Very impressive! Well-done! https://lnkd.in/epWi6_WQ
